An Ashgate Hospice lottery winner whose dad was cared for by the charity is urging others to sign up – as the rollover jackpot reaches £20,000.
Jayne Holden thought she had won £100 when she opened her winning Ashgate Lottery cheque – only to realise she had actually won £1,000!
The 55-year-old Insurance Clerk, from Barlborough, Derbyshire, signed up to give something back after the care her dad, Colin Holden, received before he died in 1991, aged just 56.
Even though the hospice had only been operating for a few years, Jayne says the Inpatient Unit staff were “kind, helpful and considering” and she’ll never forget the hospice’s “calm and peaceful aura”.
Now, after winning the lottery herself, she is urging others to join her – and they could be in with a chance of winning big themselves.
“My dad died at Ashgate Hospice back in 1991 and it was just the perfect place for him,” said Jayne. “Dad was diagnosed with lung cancer and three brain tumours – it made life incredibly difficult to comprehend.
“He was initially cared for at Ashgate for four days to give my mum some much-needed respite; we were all so grateful for everything they did.
“By signing up to the Ashgate Lottery, I feel like I am repaying my debt to the hospice for looking after my dad.
“I’d urge anyone thinking about it to please do – you’ll be helping fund care for families like mine and also be in with a chance of winning a nice prize!”
The hospice’s rollover gives players the chance to win up to £25,000 at a cost of just £1 each week. If the rollover is not won, it increases in £500 increments each week.
Carla-Louise Hind, Lottery Executive at the hospice, said: “Jayne is a loyal supporter of our lottery so to hear her delight after winning £1,000 was just fantastic!
“I’m glad we were able to bear there for Jayne and her family at the end of her dad’s life more than 30 years ago now.
“You can help us continue to care for families like Jayne’s in years to come by singing up to our lottery – it only costs £1 a week!
“And not only will you be in with a chance of winning our £20,000 rollover jackpot, but you’ll be doing something amazing to support your local community too!”
