Ashgate Hospice > Hospice Care Week: ‘I changed career so I could give back to my local hospice and community’

Veronica Evans swapped life in the private sector to join Ashgate Hospice’s fundraising team as she wanted to contribute to her local community.

Two years later, she has no regrets about her decision to join the hospice Supporter Engagement Team (SET) as a Fundraising Support Executive.

Veronica had an eclectic career prior to joining the hospice – working in sales after starting in bartending and event management, before moving on to music publicity and sales in the tech industry.

Her role now sees her focus on working with all aspects of the fundraising database in order to communicate and assist supporters with their fundraising efforts.

It’s significantly different to her past positions but Veronica says working at Ashgate allows her to “be creative in a meaningful role”.

“I made a decision to pivot my career to non-profit work in the hope that I would find a role that would contribute to the wellbeing of the community in which I lived,” said Veronica.

“When I saw that Ashgate’s fundraising department was hiring, I jumped on it! I applied for the role because I’m passionate about supporting a cause I believe in, and it was a chance for me to make a meaningful impact while utilising my current skills and learning new ones.”

As well as experience in a range of industries, Veronica has a master’s degree in social sciences, which she says has helped her along the way.

From improving the quality of engagement and communication with the hospice’s loyal supporters to helping the events team prepare for big events like the Sparkle Night Walk – Veronica helps the hospice generate the £9 million it needs each year to fund its care.

She says helping raise money to help fund vital care for families is “very rewarding”.

Veronica added: “Working at Ashgate is always a delightful experience. It’s a place where my skills and passions align, making me feel fulfilled and motivated.

“I enjoy the camaraderie with colleagues, the sense of purpose and the opportunity for personal and professional growth. It’s a place where I can be creative in a meaningful role, and I look forward to each day.

“The hospice is great at fostering a culture of support and collaboration and each person has something unique to offer and is encouraged in their development.

“I’d recommend working at Ashgate to anyone. There are so many opportunities here, and the support the staff receives is unparalleled.”
