International Day of Friendship is celebrated every year on 30 July to acknowledge the significance friendships have in enriching our lives.
At Ashgate Hospice, we witness the profound impact of friendship daily. Among our dedicated volunteers, June Spreckley and Lynne North stand out for their unwavering commitment and the beautiful friendship they have developed.
June and Lynne met when they started volunteering as Meal Assistants on the Inpatient Unit around 18 months ago. Neither knew the other before, but their connection was immediate and heartfelt. Lynne reminisces, “We just clicked, and I wouldn’t want to work without June by my side.” This instant bond marked the beginning of a friendship that has blossomed and deepened.
Their volunteering involves dividing tasks to streamline their work. They have a special routine of entering a patient’s room side by side. June explains, “We will always endeavour to enter a patient’s room together… this gives support to each other in making sure that we have heard or interpreted a patient’s needs and requests correctly for their best welfare.”
Volunteering alongside each other has taught them valuable lessons about themselves and each other. June states, “I have learnt from Lynne that you can be two people with very different personalities and interests, but sharing a common goal can bring you great joy and an amazing friendship.”
Their individual characters blend, creating a strong friendship and effective working relationship. Lynne shares, “June is one of the kindest people I have met, and whilst working, I have found out that she has the most meticulous attention to detail.” June praises Lynne’s “enthusiastic and bubbly personality” as well as her “infectiously upbeat approach to any situation.”
Lynne recalls one particularly funny memory: “We were just having pictures taken while working on Christmas Day. The photographer said, ‘Look at each other!’ and that’s where our heads went back, and we laughed so much. Something so simple, but the photo is amazing.”
A particularly touching memory for June is when Lynne accompanied her to a live television interview. June recalls, “Lynne volunteered to accompany me on the journey up to the studio in Leeds. She helped to prepare my words and kept me calm before the interview. This was so incredibly kind of Lynne to give up her day in this way, and I will never forget it.” Lynne adds, “June did amazingly, although she was very nervous. We were all so proud of her.”
June and Lynne credit the welcoming environment at the hospice for positively impacting their relationships and their roles. June highlights, “The inclusive community has allowed us to determine how we could work together in a way that suited us yet still delivered the required results.” Lynne adds, “I’m very grateful that Ashgate has given me the opportunity to make friends not only with June but with the other staff… they’re all so lovely and friendly. I would urge anyone to take on a volunteering role at Ashgate Hospice.”
June and Lynne’s friendship perfectly highlights how volunteering can enrich your life and relationships with others. Being part of Ashgate can give you the opportunity to make lasting friendships with like-minded, compassionate people.
