A seven-year-old and her mum are preparing to get their capes on and conquer Ashgate Hospice’s Superhero Night Walk in memory of their beloved granddad and dad.
Darcy-Grace and her mum Abbie Briggs will join hundreds of other families at the second-ever family-friendly fundraiser in Queen’s Park, Chesterfield on Saturday 19 October.
They will be walking in memory of Abbie’s dad Dave Scott, who was cared for by the hospice in his final days before his death, aged 77.
It will be the second time the mother and daughter duo, from Chesterfield, take on the walk after signing up last year when doctors told Dave he had lung cancer.
He had planned to join the pair at the event but sadly deteriorated and died on 10th September, just two weeks after being diagnosed.
Abbie, 29, said: “He was told he had about four to six months left with us but unfortunately after just three and a half weeks he died with me by his side.
“As a daddy’s girl this hit me so hard, and it was a huge blow to us all. Everything just happened so quickly.
“Because of the hospice, my dad was able to be at home with his family, which is exactly where he wanted to be.
“We’re just grateful for the hospice and everything they did for my dad in such a short space of time – they were all just amazing.”
Dave, who was from Clay Cross, was able to fulfill his wish of being at home in his final days thanks to the care of the hospice’s Palliative Care Specialist Nurse Team.
The hospice delivered specialist equipment and a bed to his home just a few days after his diagnosis was confirmed to ensure he could be as comfortable as possible while receiving care.
Abbie said not only was the hospice there for her dad but also supported her emotionally “during the most heartbreaking of times”.
In tribute to Dave’s life, Abbie and Darcy-Grace will once again take part in the Superhero Night Walk in tribute to him.
“Last year we decided we’d take on the Superhero Night Walk together,” said Abbie. “Dad was really looking forward to it but sadly, he deteriorated quicker than we expected.
“Darcy-Grace was the light and soul of his life. They had the most perfect relationship – the sort you would dream of having with grandparents.
“We have signed up for the event again to do in memory of dad again while raising money for a local charity that holds a special place in our hearts.
“It was a wonderful event last year and the atmosphere was impeccable. Everyone who was there was there for a reason and we all walked together in memory of our loved ones.
“Joining me and Darcy-Grace this year will mean Ashgate can be there for future families to experience the same warmth, care and respect that my lovely dad received at the end of his life.”
Tickets cost just £6 per child and adults go FREE. The walk will start at 5:30pm, and doors will open at 4.30pm.
Every participating child will receive a fundraising pack, superhero cape, and a glow-in-the-dark mask to wear whilst taking part in the event.
