Ashgate Hospice > Sharing our work at the Hospice UK Conference 2024

This week, we had the privilege of attending and presenting at the Hospice UK Conference – a key event for those passionate about improving hospice and palliative care across the country.

The theme this year was all about accessibility, sustainability, and quality care. For us at Ashgate, it was a chance to share the work we’re doing to make hospice care more inclusive, compassionate, and accessible to everyone who needs it.

Liz Allam LGBT+ presentation

Making hospice care inclusive for the LGBT+ community

Presented by Liz Allam, Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Lead and Rebekah Neelin, Director of People and Culture.

Rebekah and Liz shared insights from our journey through the Rainbow Accreditation process with Derbyshire LGBT+. This accreditation shows our commitment to being a welcoming, inclusive space for LGBT+ people—whether they’re patients, volunteers, or staff.

Reflecting on this experience, Rebekah noted, “This wasn’t about ticking boxes — we worked in partnership with our accreditors to reflect, celebrate and learn more about creating a safe, welcoming environment where everyone feels respected.”

Stephen Rumford Tai Chi presentation

Implementing a Tai Chi programme in a Physiotherapy service

Presented by Stephen Rumford, Lead Physiotherapist.

Stephen introduced our Tai Chi programme, which has become a key part of our physiotherapy service. While it’s been amazing for helping people manage pain and improve mobility, the emotional benefits have also been unexpected but powerful.

“I knew Tai Chi could support physical health, but it’s been incredible to see how it’s also helping people emotionally,” Stephen shared. “It’s made a real difference.”

Hearing and responding to our patients' voices

Presented by Amanda Griffiths, Patient Experience and Complaint Lead.

Amanda shared how we’ve made it easier for patients to tell us what they think about their care through our own feedback system. It’s already led to meaningful changes—like creating a quiet space in our Day Services for private conversations or for those with hearing difficulties.

Amanda summed it up simply: “It’s about listening and making real changes to improve patient experiences.”

Training healthcare professionals to deliver better care

Presented by Shelagh Freeman and Erica Robins, End of Life Care Facilitators.

Shelagh and Erica highlighted our training programme, which equips healthcare professionals across our local area with the skills they need to deliver high-quality, compassionate end of life care.

“We want every patient, no matter where they are, to receive the highest standard of care. This education programme makes that possible,” said Shelagh.

The Hospice UK Conference reminded us why we’re so passionate about what we do. We came away inspired, with new ideas to keep pushing for hospice care that’s inclusive, compassionate, and centred around the people who need us most.
