With Christmas around the corner, have you thought about popping into your local charity shops for gifts? Avid charity shopper June Thomson-Neath shares her passion for finding unique gifts while supporting her local community.
In this blog, the 69-year-old, from Matlock, reveals how charity shops – especially Ashgate Hospice’s – offer one-of-a-kind items, budget-friendly prices and the joy of giving back, especially at Christmas.
A treasure trove of unique finds
“One of the joys of browsing in charity shops is the thrill of discovering something completely unexpected – you never know what you’re going to come across. Unlike the mass-produced items found in regular major retailers, charity shops often have one-of-a-kind treasures that you don’t often come across elsewhere.
“Vintage scarves, quirky home decor, and beautiful items of clothing can all be found if you take some time to look. It’s like a treasure hunt, and there’s nothing quite like the satisfaction of finding that special gift for someone you care about!”
Gifts that don’t break the bank
“Shopping at charity shops can also be a great budget-friendly option. You can often find high-quality items at a fraction of the retail price. I remember finding a stunning vintage silk scarf that ended up making an eye-catching gift that my friend loved.
“Recently, I bought a brand-new designer dress from the Ashgate Hospice shop in Matlock for a friend’s birthday – this made her day extra special. There’s a sense of value in these discoveries, knowing you’re getting something unique without breaking the bank.”
Something for everyone
“Charity shops offer a wide range of products, making it easy to find gifts for everyone on your list. From stylish clothes and shoes to delightful homeware and children’s toys, there’s something for every taste and age group.
“As a retired schoolteacher and grandmother, I particularly enjoy picking up educational wooden toys for my grandchildren. They make excellent stocking stuffers and bring joy to their holiday season.”
Shopping that makes a difference
“The best thing about shopping at Ashgate Hospice’s charity shops is knowing that every penny spent goes to funding vital care across North Derbyshire – a cause that is very close to my heart. Knowing my shopping is helping others makes the experience even more rewarding.”
June’s tips for charity shop success
“Christmas shopping at charity shops is not just about finding gifts, it’s about the thrill of discovery, supporting your community, and sharing thoughtful presents with loved ones. You might just find the perfect gift that stands out, brings a smile, and helps others in the process.
“Happy treasure hunting and happy Christmas!”
