Ashgate Hospice is inviting passionate and committed individuals to apply for Trustee roles to help lead the organisation into the future.
The hospice, based in Old Brampton, Chesterfield, provides free palliative and end of life care and support to patients and families across North Derbyshire.
To strengthen the breadth of expertise on its Board of Trustees, Ashgate said it is seeking professionals with skills and experience in clinical, estates and commercial business.
Associate Trustee positions are also available for individuals who are interested but do not yet have any governance experience.
In addition, the hospice is looking for people to join the Board of Directors for the retail arm of Ashgate, helping to oversee its 19 shops while playing a key role in decisions about lease renewals and new business opportunities.
Kirstie Wilson, Audit and Accounts Director at Shorts Accountants, joined the North Derbyshire hospice as Ashgate’s youngest ever Trustee in 2022 following the death of her dad, Steven Goodall, about two years before.
Kirstie, who is also chair of the Ashgate Hospice Shops Ltd Board, said: “My dad was cared for at home by the hospice’s team, and they made what was a really sad time much more bearable than we ever imagined.
“I wanted to give something back, and becoming a trustee seemed like a great way to do that. I really enjoy being part of something so much bigger than myself.
“Ashgate is an organisation that so many people hold dearly and knowing that I’m contributing to its continued work is very rewarding.
“I’m lucky that my employer supports my trustee role by allowing me to attend meetings during work time as part of their volunteer initiative.
“To anyone thinking of applying for a trustee role, I’d say that no matter your background or what your day job is, all skills are valuable on a board. If you have the time, it’s a really rewarding experience.”
Trustees and Directors at the hospice volunteer their time and expertise to direct its long-term strategy and have an oversight of the charity’s performance.
Chair of the Trustees, Chris Hallam, said: “At Ashgate, we are passionate about making a real difference for people living with life-limiting or incurable illnesses – and as trustees play a crucial role in ensuring we can continue to provide outstanding care for those who need us.
“We are looking for committed individuals who can bring their skills, experience, and fresh perspectives to help shape our strategy and make a meaningful impact.
“Whether a candidate’s background is in healthcare, business, retail, finance, or beyond, their contribution will help us navigate the challenges ahead and seize opportunities to grow and innovate.”
Recent workforce survey results published in February revealed that 93% of volunteers said they would recommend Ashgate Hospice as a place to volunteer.
Meanwhile, 99% of them said they would be happy to recommend the hospice to their family and friends as a place to receive care.
