Ashgate Hospice > How our refurbished Day Services is making Ashgate more inclusive

When we started planning the refurbishment of our Day Services, reception area and clinic rooms, we knew we wanted to make the space as welcoming and inclusive as possible for everyone who comes through our doors – whether that’s patients, staff, volunteers or visitors.

To help us get it right, we worked with local accessibility consultant Jane Cooper from Access and Inclusion. Jane audited our plans and gave us invaluable advice on how to make the area more accessible, considering the needs of people with physical and learning disabilities, dementia, and those who are neurodivergent. Thanks to her valuable insights and the hard work of the whole project team, we’re thrilled to share the new, inclusive features that are helping to make our hospice a more comfortable and accessible place for everyone.

The upgrades we made

  • A fully accessible toilet – designed with plenty of space for wheelchairs and features that help everyone use it with ease and dignity.

  • A quiet room – a calm, private space for anyone who needs a moment away. With plain, neutral walls and softer lighting, it’s designed to reduce visual overload for neurodivergent people and help prevent confusion for those with dementia.

  • Easy access seating – a range of different armchairs and tables to make it easier and more comfortable for people with mobility challenges.

  • A dedicated accessible complementary therapy room – offering a peaceful, private space for treatments like massage or aromatherapy sessions.

Much of this work has been made possible thanks to funding from trusts and grants, allowing us to bring these much-needed improvements to life. We’ve also had amazing support from local businesses, who have donated materials and expertise for free or at a discounted rate.

These new spaces reflect our commitment to making Ashgate as accessible as possible. We’re so pleased to see the difference they’re making for everyone who visits, works, or volunteers at our hospice.
