Walkers of all ages and abilities are being invited to step out into the Peak District this March to raise vital funds for end of life care in North Derbyshire.
Ashgate Hospice’s annual High Peak Trail Walk returns this spring on Sunday 22 March, following the historic route of the former Cromford and High Peak Railway and offering a choice of distances to suit different levels of experience.
Participants will gather at Cromford Meadows before being taken by coach to their chosen starting point, with options including a 17-mile trek, an 11-mile walk, or a shorter 3.5-mile route suitable for less experienced walkers and children. All routes take in the scenic Derbyshire countryside, with support and refreshments provided along the way.
Among those taking on the longest route this year is Bethany Li, 24, from Chesterfield, who is walking in memory of her dad, Lung Li, who was cared for by Ashgate Hospice.
Bethany, who is in her final year of a nursing degree at the University of Derby, is completing the 17-mile walk alongside friends as part of her commitment to fundraising for the hospice each year.
Her dad, Lung, owned Halo Taxis in Chesterfield and was diagnosed with cancer in February 2023, aged 50. He died in March 2024, aged 51.
Bethany said: “When we first found out about my dad’s diagnosis, everything felt very uncertain and frightening. A week later we were told it was palliative, and that was devastating for our whole family.”
After months of treatment and repeated hospital admissions, Lung was admitted to Ashgate Hospice as an inpatient in December 2023.
“The staff at Ashgate were amazing with all of us,” Bethany said. “They always made sure my dad was comfortable and took the time to check in with us too. He had a double room so my younger brother and sisters could stay overnight, which meant everything to our family.
“Ashgate allowed us to see my dad settled and without pain. That’s something I will always cherish.”
Bethany describes her dad as family-orientated, with favourite memories including movie nights after trips to Blockbuster and the Chinese dishes he loved to cook.
“Whenever I rewatch the James Bond or Marvel films, they always remind me of him,” she said.
Since her dad’s death, Bethany has made a commitment to fundraise for Ashgate Hospice every year. In 2024, she and her brother raised £2,300 by taking part in a Tough Mudder. In 2025, she completed Sparkle Night Walk with friends. This year, they have decided to “go big” with the 17-mile High Peak Trail Walk.
“I’m feeling positive about it,” Bethany added. “We’ve all been training with long hikes. It’s a big challenge, but it’s for such a good cause – and I know that feeling at the finish line will be worth it.”
Entry costs for the High Peak Trail Walk depend on the distance chosen. The 17-mile and 11-mile routes cost £15 per adult, while the 3.5-mile walk costs £10 for adults and £5 per child.
Entry includes a t-shirt, medal, coach transfer to the chosen starting point and refreshments along the route.
