What is acupuncture and how does it help in palliative care?

Acupuncture is a treatment that involves inserting fine needles into specific points on the body to stimulate sensory nerves. This process encourages the release of natural pain-relieving substances, such as endorphins.

At Ashgate, we use Western medical acupuncture, also known as dry needling, alongside traditional medical treatments to address symptoms such as pain, nausea, and breathlessness.

How does acupuncture help with pain relief?

Pain management is one of the most well-documented benefits of acupuncture. By stimulating nerves and encouraging the body to produce natural painkillers, acupuncture helps to reduce discomfort without the side effects of medication. Many patients say they feel more at ease and in control of their symptoms after receiving treatment.

How can acupuncture help with anxiety, stress, and nausea?

Acupuncture doesn’t just help with physical symptoms – it also has a positive impact on mental wellbeing. Stress and anxiety can make physical symptoms worse, so acupuncture provides a natural way to restore balance. Patients often describe feeling relaxed and recharged after treatment. Additionally, acupuncture can help manage nausea, making it a useful therapy for those experiencing sickness due to illness or medication.

How often do patients receive acupuncture?

The frequency of treatment varies depending on the individual, but a typical course consists of six sessions. These are usually conducted weekly and then reduced to a maintenance schedule every few months. Sessions usually last around 45 minutes, with an initial consultation for the Physiotherapist to assess medical history and symptoms.

How does acupuncture work alongside other treatments?

Acupuncture complements conventional treatments such as medication. As a non-pharmacological approach, it provides symptom relief without the side effects of drugs, making it an excellent addition to a patient’s overall care plan. It can also be used alongside other physiotherapy techniques to help patients achieve their personal goals.

Do the needles hurt?

One of the most common concerns is that acupuncture will be painful. However, the needles used are extremely fine, and most patients feel little to no discomfort. If a needle does cause pain, it is removed immediately.

How does acupuncture improve quality of life?

Many patients tell us that acupuncture makes them feel better in themselves and helps them cope with the challenges they face in a more controlled manner. They feel relaxed and recharged after treatment, which can make a big difference to their overall wellbeing.
