Ashgate Hospice > Last Days Matter

At Ashgate Hospice, we know how important it is to have open and honest conversations about death and dying. Our Last Days Matter workshop offers practical advice, emotional support and a safe, compassionate space to talk about something that affects us all.

Whether you’re supporting someone at the end of their life, preparing for your own future, or simply want to feel more confident talking about death and grief, this session is for you.

What the session covers

This is a three-hour workshop, gently led by Ashgate’s trained staff and volunteers, with time and space for questions, reflections and discussion. It’s informal, open to everyone aged 18 and over, and includes:

  • Planning for the future
Looking at both practical and emotional aspects, including wills and advance care planning.
  • Finding your ‘3am friend’
Helping those who want to die at home identify someone they can call on at any time, whether that’s a family member, friend or neighbour.
  • How to say goodbye
It’s never easy, but this part of the session offers gentle guidance on having those important conversations.
  • Recognising the signs of dying
Understanding the physical changes that happen in the final days and weeks of life.
  • Navigating the ‘new normal’
Grief can feel uncertain. Many people wonder what is ‘normal’ after someone has died, this section offers reassurance and support.

"It was a great session. Such important information we all need, and I don’t know where else I would have found it."

"I thought it was the best workshop I have ever attended. It was extremely well presented; the subject was very interesting to the point that time flew by. I was interested in every aspect discussed."
